Sealevel Change and Sustainable Development of the Randstad Metropole

The project aims at establishing scenarios of human induced sealevel increase and its effect on coastal

development of the Western Netherlands by extrapolating published satellite data and drawing maps.

This will provide insights on how to develop the Randstad in a sustainable way.

General Project Outline:

  • How are we going to develop the Randstad?
  • How are we going to adapt land use and local economy during a rising sealevel?
  • Where do we built infrastructure, houses?
  • Can we adopt or design new forms of architecture for people to live on the water?
  • Can we shift local economies and specific population centres to high tech, network, energy neutral cities on higher and safer ground without disrupting the local population?
  • How are we going to prepare the public for medium to long term changes? How can this project contribute to a change in lifestyle (mitigation).

Specific Projects:

  • Can we use the Markerwaard as a testing ground for developing modern water communities?
  • How are we going to defend Leiden as the historical and academic centre of the western part of The Netherlands?
  • How are we going to prepare the Haarlemmermeer as a basin for water management during or after flooding events between 2150-2200?
  • Can we design an economic growth are (smart city) in Drenthe?
  • How are we going to prepare the public and local parties (farmers, building industry, public) for such projects?

Project example: By Kate Dreuning:

Project 4: The Psychology of a Largely Long term Problem

-How can we prepare the public for these changes that are coming?

-How do we communicate with the different stakeholders (Farmers, population, businesses,

governments)?

-Can we change the behaviour of the population so the problem of climate change and hence

sealevel rise can be mitigated?

-How do we connect scientific reseach with politics and population?

-If these problems are for future generations, could we start with the environmental impact on

the Waddenzee which drawns after 2050? Can we interview the Wadden Vereniging? Can we

discuss the impact with the people in the north (Waddeneilanden, North sea Coast)?

-Could we do a media investigation project on this theme? How do media address

Sealevel change and it’s impact on the Randstad?
